The principle attraction is the fully restored steam tram from 1894, which operates on several weekends between April and October.
Succumb to the magic and charm of Bern, the capital of Switzerland and a UNESCO world cultural heritage site. The diversity and unique beauty of the city are sure to delight you!
The steam tramway runs along the cobbled streets with covered arcades and decorated facades nearby. On the trips to the destinations of either Burgernziel or Guisanplatz you can see the famed clock tower, the medieval cathedral, the distinctive houses of parliament, the river Aare and several of the renown and playful fountains - these and many more sights are key features of Bern.
In 1994 the restoration of the tramway locomotive started. Supported by donations and by hundreds of hours of work by dedicated volunteers, the restored tram steamed up in autumn of 2002.
Be sure to make the vintage steam tram part of your visit to historic Bern!
Charter Hire for Steam Enthusiasts
The steam tram is available for group charter, and recently has become one of the favorite Swiss steam fixtures for UK-based rail enthusiasts. Hop onboard this classic 19th century vehicle to navigate the busy Bern public transport system in style! Race over the gradient at Kornhausbrücke, climb up the steep hill between Helvetiaplatz and Thunplatz, see how the tram takes water and coal reserves at the depot, and reach all end-of-the-line turning loops, with the exception of the Fischermätteli station. A standard two hour charter affords the possibility to cross both river Aare bridges and visit the Guisanplatz and Saali endpoints, while a three hour charter makes it possible to navigate the entire Bern tramway network and "collect all track", with the exception of the Fischermätteli branch, which the steam tram can't reach due to technical and operational restraints. To make a reservation for an upcoming charter run, please contact us directly at
. The operating season runs from April to December. Small snacks and beverages can be provided on the tram, if requested.
