| Travel-Report of an English group (08/05)
The main afternoon event was the tram tour of the Bern system leaving from the Eigerplatz tram depot, adjacent to our hotel. Steam tram No 12 (SLM Winterthur of 1894) posed for photos before taking its trailer around most of the Bern tram network. Both locomotive and trailer car were in superb condition and quite rightly attracted lots of admiration from passers-by. Full gricing requirements were met by traversing the loops at Mingerstrasse, Saali, Ostring, Wabern and Wallgasse as well as the exit and entrance spurs to the depot at Brunnadern Strasse. The latter was also a fuel and water stop. The loop outside Bern HBF was also traversed. It was all so good that we returned to Eigerplatz nearly an hour later than expected! As if all that were not enough the electric tram and its trailer appeared from the depot to take us out again -this time with beer and a sandwich each!! We went round the HBF loop again, probably for the last time as it is scheduled to be lifted soon. Some of the route duplicated the steam route but there was one section to Fischermatteli that we could not do with the steam tram because of a long and severe gradient. It was just after dark when the excursion returned to the Eigerplatz depot and a tired but happy bunch saw our steed put way.
